Weekend Warriors: August 11-13
It's literally a count-down to the end of the summer. The end of the summer weekends are in plain sight. Make the most of it!
Music at St. James. During the noon hour each Friday in August, enjoy music for two pianos at St. James Lutheran Church. Timothy and Nancy LeRoi Nickel perform Mozart's C Major Sonata, the "Musiques Foraines" of Florent Schmitt and Frank Ferko's "Le Tombeau de Mimi" in the first concert. St. James Lutheran Church, 1315 SW Park Ave., 227-2439. Noon Friday, Aug. 4. Donations accepted.
Portland Twilight Criterium. Free music and helmets for kids? Great reasons to go and celebrate these riders. There'll be a beer and food garden, all in the setting of the South Park Blocks in the middle of the city. Great entertainment watching cyclists go round and round and round and round and round. Friday, starting at 4:30 PM.
Washington Park Festival. The music and picnicking continue with the diverse line-up this weekend:
Fri, Aug. 11 - Reggie Houston and The Crescent City Connection (New Orleans Jazz)
Sat, Aug. 12 - Celebrating Vietnamese Culture
Sun, Aug. 13 - Portland Festival Symphony with 3 Leg Torso
Bridge Pedal 2006. It's the 11 annual family bike ride, with options for a 6- (14 miles), 8- (24 miles), or 10- bridge ride (36 miles). The website swears it will be a smoother ride than last year's congested glob of people walking their bikes up the Marquam Bridge. Speedy riders can start at 6:30, and the families start much later. Children under 12 years old on their own bikes should ride the 6- or 8- bridge ride. There's also a corresponding Bridge Stride. Register at any New Seasons. Sunday morning, various start times.

That criterium sounds really fun to me. Never seen one before but apparently my husband has. The music sounds fun and I'd be interested to see the peloton fly by a few times but I bet Andrew won't make it through the entire event!

I discovered a coffeeshop today next to Jamison Square. I think it's new, but it could have been there a while, because we usually park on the other side of the square than we did today. It's called "Sip and Kranz", and when we walked in my son said "it's so clean!". It is, very white and sunny, with comfy chairs, big and small, a clean new carpeted (no-shoes-allowed) play room, divided by a glass wall, with tv, games, books, big windows to the outside. My kids are 3 and 6, but it seems like it would be a great playspace for crawlers and toddlers as well. They serve Tillamook ice cream, Stumptown coffee, salads, pbj, cereal, granola...
A nice stop after the Jamison Sq. fountain, and a good bribe for the kids when I want to get them to leave.
