'Explosive Child' or 'Spirited Child' support group

July 14, 2016

Hi everyone! I'm looking to start a support group for parents of children who defy the traditional parenting techniques. I have 3 children, 10, 5 and 3. My 2 youngest are adopted and my 5 year old just beats to a different drum. Smart, loving, witty, extremely strong-willed, and challenging. She continues to be in play therapy, we've been through PCIT (parent child interaction therapy), and I myself have a therapist who focuses on attachment. What I'm missing is face to face time with other parents that are also dealing with strong willed children. Books I gravitate toward are, Raising your Spirited Child, The Explosive Child, Easy to Love Difficult to Dicipline, and kids parents and power struggles. All these techniques in these books require a great deal of patience and practice and it can be very daunting and overwhelming at times when you're up against enormous temper tantrums and frequent oppositional behaviors. But with a community of others who are familiar with parenting the children that don't alter their behaviors with, time outs, time in's, 1:1 mom / dad time, behavioral charts, choices, etc. That support could be invaluable to being the parents our kids need us to be. I'm looking for a support group that could possibly meet weekly, our struggles happen often in a day, a weekly group would help me keep focused on being the best parent I can be. We could focus on independent goals or a group one, then support through the rough patches and celebrate the positive ones. I live close in SE, a friend that is also interested in participating lives in Beaverton. We could switch off meeting at one anothers homes, or somewhere in the community. Warmly, Shelley Shelcarmichael@yahoo.com

Scrubby Notebooks: the portable whiteboard with a social conscience

November 08, 2015

Colorful and skull juniors edit 1-smaller
Scrubby is a reusable notebook made with dry erase pages so you can create anywhere. Use it with dry erase markers and it works just like your whiteboard. Use it with correctable markers and the ink does not wipe away, but erases easily with the pen's eraser or a cloth.

It's rugged and waterproof so you'll be able to reuse it over and over again. The covers feature amazing art by homeless youth from p:ear and a portion of proceeds benefit this great organization.

It's a great way to keep kids unplugged and entertained at restaurants or while travelling. Perfect for practicing writing or math, doodling, exploring ideas or playing hangman. Parents will love using them, too!

The notebooks are designed and produced in SE Portland (printed and bound at Col-Tab, a woman-owned business on SE Belmont).

Local early birds will get their notebooks in time for the holidays!

NE Portland Toddler 2-year old playgroup and Mama Gathering

October 18, 2015

I am interested in starting a neighborhood play group for 2 year olds and moms to connect. My son is 2 this month (October 2015) and we would love to meet some new friends.

I have unsuccessfully tried other groups that are huge (hundreds of members) and it is hard to make personal connections or local smaller groups that only meet occasionally  (again hard to connect when you only see a person once every 2 months).

Here is my idea:

  • The group meets 1/week - same day/time each week - TBD but it will be a weekday morning
  • We have a monthly rotating schedule of meetings similar to this: (1) member's house play date, (2) an outing like OMSI or ???, (3) member's house play date with a music or art focus, (4) outdoor or indoor park (weather dependent).
  • Outings are around town.  The other 3 are local in NE neighborhoods. Moms expected to attend 50% of meetings and to host a play date (either at your house or you select the venue elsewhere).

Group is open to 2 year olds (give or take a couple of months on either end).  In order to get to know each other and have it manageable in our houses, this will be a small group of 10 or less.

Email Karin at fallerk@msn.com for details and info.   I am also looking for 1-2 other moms to help me organize this. Thanks
