New NE Center Location: Small Wonders School

January 22, 2015

3634 Small Wonders Rendering
We are pleased to announce the opening of the new Small Wonders School early childhood center this coming June 15, 2015. We are now accepting applications and enrolling for our 2015 Summer Session or our 2015-16 school year. Currently undergoing a complete renovation this new center sized program will ultimately serve 60 children daily ages 24 months to 6. Conveniently located in Hollywood and Laurelhurst  along the commuting routes of Sandy, Broadway and I-84 this new offering provides the NE Portland community with an accessible, central childcare location at 3634 NE Sandy Blvd. For more information please visit us at and contact us today at enrollment(at) to have your questions addressed!

Reggio-inspired, custom designed and built to our specifications the new early learning space is a delight with an abundance of natural light. Entering into our grand and open Welcoming Room you will spy our studio space or Atelier, accessible for small group use for art experiences and exploratory projects. The Welcome Room houses art materials, custom project tables, a reception space to greet you and gathering benches for you and your child to say goodbyes or share hellos and stories! Off this central gathering place are our three classrooms, the toddler room to the right divided into two separate zones for small intimate groups with low ratios—perfect for the littles. And to the left: our mixed-age preschool rooms. Large yet warming and inviting the preschool rooms provide an open flow between the indoor and outdoor classrooms. SmallWonders Logo Banner

Small Wonders School, voted Metro Parent’s Family Favorite for 2014-15, offers a high quality preschool program with the convenience child care hours Monday-Friday 7:30-5:30. Following the children’s interest we explore a variety of themes with our lesson plans incorporating all of the Multiple Intelligences. Our days are filled with freeplay, exploratory projects, song circle and quality art experiences where children are exposed to a variety of art materials, styles and techniques. 3, 4 and 5 day schedules are available--additional enrollment and program information can be found at

At the center children 3 and older will participate in a Mixed age classroom. We feel this structure provides more flexibility for preschoolers and their particular stage of learning. Not all 3-year-olds are in the same place developmentally, socially or academically, and just as highlighted by the Theory of Multiple Intelligences learning styles, readiness for such can vary widely. Mixed age classrooms are more attuned to these differences and offer children a more varied approach as they can be grouped or gathered for play with other children on their level. This lessens the likelihood of frustrations or performance stressors. Having your child in a mixed-age group classroom gives them the opportunity to master needed skills and concepts before moving on to additional levels. They also give children deeper relationship with their teachers and peers, with less transitions to deal with. Older children have the opportunity to be role models to others, and younger child can get to see that their friends have mastered what they are working on, which can grant them confidence. Parents also have the opportunity to build a longer relationship with their child’s teacher. This partnership benefits children greatly.

Outfitted with high quality materials and furnishings the new program space will be a delightful learning center. As a Reggio-inspired program we have an Atelier or studio space located in our Welcoming Room as the heart of our program. Each class has daily use of this creative art environment for small group exploration and project time. It was designed to offer children and teachers a space to extend and support projects and experiences in the classroom, and to explore and combine many types of materials, tools, and techniques. Our Atelier is to be a beautiful, useful arts space that models the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach.

Part-time Care Openings for Infants at Oak & Rose School (NE)

January 19, 2015

Oak & Rose School currently has multiple immediate openings for infants under the age of 1 at our Rose House location. (NE 29th & Wygant)

                                             Oak and rose

We offer curriculum based care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of age. We envision a learning community that supports experiential learning, creative expression, outdoor adventure, and a garden and food program children can participate in. Above all, we aim to co-create a space based on community and respect. We are a certified in-home center with low child to teacher ratios and an expereinced staff.

The infants and toddlers at Oak & Rose spend their days in a space specifically designed with their needs in mind. Children have lots of room to explore their safe and stimulating environment. We create activities that allow for gross motor development through a natural environment with an emphasis on offering toys that are natural objects or are naturally made (i.e. wood blocks, fabric, pinecones) and avoiding battery-operated and plastic toys. We've created a space free of furniture or contraptions that children need assistance with. (i.e. swings, high chairs, cribs, etc.) This is based on the RIE philosophy and in our experience best supports gross motor development and develops independence. We also offer daily art and music activities, walks through our neighborhood with wagons, a wonderful backyard, and a fantastic food prgram.

Please visit our website at for more information. If you are interested in coming in for a tour, please contact Emily Stennes, enrollment coordinator, at

Nanny share - Looking for a second family!

We're looking for a second family to share a full-time (M-F) nanny beginning in mid-April. Our baby boy will be 4 months old. Dad works from home in our Sunnyside home (near SE Belmont/47th) and ideally we would share/split the hosting between homes. Mom works in NW near Good Sam so a family in that neighborhood could work as well!
We'd love to hear from you if the timing and location seems like it would work for you!

Opening for Infant with SAHM - Northeast

My name is Victoria and I gave birth to a daughter in the middle of November. Originally, I was planning to return to work at the beginning of February, but have since decided to stay home and care for her. I would love to find her a child similar in age to interact with while at home!

My daughter is a healthy, bright, curious child and it is important to me and my husband that she receive lots of social interaction and play time in a safe, comfortable, and clean environment. Our current day includes singing, dancing, walks in our stroller, playing with various sounds/shapes/colors/textures/noises, and reading, with breaks for napping and eating as baby needs. She will receive the recommended vaccinations from her pediatrician, and has had no illnesses since being born.

I plan to give any child I look after the same affection, care and attention that I give to my daughter.

Our house is located in Northeast Portland near schools, parks and public transportation. I am CPR certified and happy to support many parenting styles and needs. I am more than willing to accommodate your working schedule (FT or PT), including last minute changes or cancellations. Finally, I know how anxiety inducing it can be to leave your child, and am happy to set up nanny cams or check-ins so you can rest assured your little one is well taken care of.

Please let me know if any of the above sounds like a good fit! I can be reached at

I look forward to speaking with you!

Part Time Toddler Care Opening in NE Portland

Screen shot 2014-11-11 at 12.08.27 AM

I am a former teacher who decided to provide childcare (more like a nanny-share) after having 2 adorable girls. They are 2.5 and 1.5 years old. With a wide range of experience in education as an elementary and a toddler teacher, I believe you will not regret to choose me to care for your child(ren). My qualifications include First Aid/CPR, Food Handlers, background check #, RRCAN and several other child care trainings.

I am looking for 1 or 2 friends to join our group at my home strategically located near MLK and Killingsworth with easy access to public transportation and I5. I keep my ratio low, maximum is 1:4. The ideal situation for me is to find a family with a child within the ages of 17 months old to 3 years old. This way, my daughters and your child(ren) can be friends. I am happy to take care your child(ren) from 2 to 4 days a week. The childcare is open from Tuesday-Friday at 8am-5pm. Occasional date nights and drop-ins can be arranged.

looking for part-time nanny work

January 05, 2015

My name is Jenni & I have been involved in child care for as long as I can remember - I first started when I was 12 & am now almost 26. I have mainly been doing part-time childcare for 1-3 year olds the past few years & have some, but less, experience with infants & elementary/middle schoolers.
As a nanny, I really enjoy bringing loving empowerment with subtle, yet helpful, boundaries. I am on the path of doing some sort of mindfulness-based therapy work, so I really like to help build emotional intelligence in children by engaging them to put words to their feelings & find healthy expressions that do not minimize their experience... I also love to go for walks, explore in nature, sing songs, read or make up stories, color, & make up games that utilize & expand imagination. I value healthy, organic foods & a deep reverence for the Earth. The best gift I can offer to children is my practice in presence & loving attention.
My rates are $14/hr for 1 child, $2/hr per additional child. I am also very open to a nanny share in which I would ask $10/child. I am looking for part-time work ONLY. References available upon request. Thank you! Please email jengold23@gmail.comMaxx&me

One Space Available in January for an Infant/Young Toddler in SE Woodstock Area

December 27, 2014

Are you looking for high-quality, affordable, personalized childcare in SE Portland?

Would your child thrive in a small, family-like environment rather than a crowded center?

Do you like the idea of a nanny share, but with a bit more structure and dependability?

I have been providing child care for a small group of babies and toddlers in my home since November 2012, shortly after the birth of my oldest son.  Before this, I worked closely with kids of all ages for over 12 years as an environmental educator, elementary school teacher and as a nanny.  I love spending time with children!

Our group is very much like a little family; with only four children here at one time, I am able to provide lots of individualized attention.  My oldest son is starting preschool and I will be caring for my youngest son who is 3 months old along with a 6 month old boy and a 13 month old girl.  I have availability for one more child to join our group on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm.  Additional days or extended hours might be possible as well.  I would love to find a family who is looking for at least 24 hours per week of care for their 3-18 month old child.  My rates are $7.50 per hour for 21+ hours per week and $8.50 per hour for fewer hours per week.  I am able to begin care on January 5th.

My home is located near SE Woodstock and 60th.  Inside, we enjoy lots of free play and exploration - there are plenty of books and toys, but no TV!  We like to spend lots of time outside as well - we explore nearby parks, investigate the vegetable garden, make messes on the deck, and play in the fully fenced yard.

As a child care provider (and a parent) I value maintaining a flexible routine to our days - I find that young children benefit from knowing the general flow of the day and what is coming next.  I believe that infants and toddlers thrive with consistent and adequate rest, so age-appropriate naps are prioritized.  I even have separate sleeping areas for all four babies!  I am open to supporting a variety of parenting styles and values and I have lots of experience with cloth diapering, bottle feeding, baby wearing, special diets, baby-led weaning, baby sign language, and potty learning.  I am trained in first aid and CPR and have a food handler’s license.  While I don’t adhere to a single parenting or educational methodology, I am familiar with and borrow ideas from the RIE, Attachment Parenting, Waldorf and Montessori philosophies.

If it sounds like my care might be a good fit for your family, please contact me with questions or for more information!

Part-time care for two awesome kindergartners - SE Portland

We are looking for a part-time care position available January 5 in SE Portland for two 5 - 6 year old boys. They get out of school at 2:15 and are ready to run, play, snack, and (sometimes) chill out. The boys attend elementary near the family's home, and care is needed after school four days/week. Sample weekly schedule: Monday - Thursday, 2 pm - 5:30/6 p.m. Average approximately 14 - 16 hours per week. While not required, we'd also request nanny care from 8 - 10 a.m. one Wednesday per month, to accommodate Portland Public School's late openings. The nanny's responsibilities will include school pick-ups, preparing snacks, tidying up play and meal areas (with children's help) and encouraging activities that promote the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of the children, including outdoor play and art. The ideal caregiver will be fun and interactive, and be neat and organized. Nanny must have first aid/ CPR training, a valid driver's license, and a safe car. Start date and number of days per week is flexible.

In Home Nanny Share

December 22, 2014

Hi, I’m Erin!  My 2 year old daughter Lilia and I are looking for some new friends to join our nanny-share.  I am a former educator turned stay at home mom and worked at the Ivy School, a public charter Montessori elementary, before Lilia was born, and have been doing in home child care for friends and co-workers ever since.  For the past 18 months we have been growing and learning together with our friend Bryce, but sadly, he’s growing up and moving on.

Lilia is a curious and active little girl and loves to read her books and play her keyboard.  She also likes to play outside in our backyard, paint, cook, and play in sensory bins.  She is very musical and sings all day long and has been developing social skills and discovering her individuality by playing with Bryce.  We would love to have one or two friends who are around 1.5 to 3 join us in our Laurelhurst/Kerns area home 3-5 days a week for music, coloring, painting (we LOVE to paint), playing matching games, putting together puzzles, baking, yoga, science experiments, dancing, taking walks, and going on outings to the library, the Children’s museum, the zoo, OMSI, and the park, with Grandma (my mom lives nearby and loves to spend time with us).

I've been a nanny for the past 12 years and with each family I have learned and grown as person and I believe I know and understand children very well. My own observations and first hand experiences have shown me that there is no one-way of approaching and caring for a child, you need a diverse skill-set and boatloads of patience. I love being a nanny and have been blessed to work with great families, but as I look towards retiring I want maximize my positive impact on as many children as possible in this time-frame. So as a nanny and grandma, I feel it’s a natural progression for me to open my home to a small group of young people to provide a long-term and peaceful environment that will foster their journey towards becoming world citizens.

We take from both Montessori and Waldorf methods of learning and collaborate with our agrarian lifestyle to provide a loving and safe environment to educate children ages 3-6. Our days are filled with stimulating self-directed play to ignite a passion for learning while growing individually and gaining independence. Our curriculum is diverse and provides an opportunity to thrive. On any given day you'll find us practicing meditation or yoga, in our science lab, writing our next puppet show, tending to our organic garden grow room, naming planets in our solar system, beating drums in music class, observing our ant farm, chopping fresh veggies for a seasonal pot pie, or maybe digging in a cranberry and cinnamon sensory tub. We start at 8:30am Monday-Thursday Morning class is 8:30-12:30 with extended hours to 3:30pm. Contact Miss Brittany for more information at 971-998-7672 Image

Golden Apples is a certified preschool located just off Alberta Street in Northeast Portland. We have created this school to provide nurturing education to children ages 2 1/2 to 6 years of age in a hand made, activity driven environment. Our curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of children by drawing upon the best aspects of Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia. Our space is stewarded by Scott and Shannon with an unprecedentedly low student to teacher ratio, 7 to 2! That means that Golden Apples children receive our best focus and enable us to provide a dedicated education experience.

We welcome families to come and visit our school during hours of operation or by special appointment. We are currently enrolling for a few spaces that will be opening up at the end of August.  We have both part time and full time options and a policy of making school fun for children and convenient for parents.

Nanny Wanted for our already established nanny share:

About the kids: Will, who will turn one in December, likes to stand up on things, push chairs to walk, and crawl after the cats. He’s adventurous, funny, and is currently taking one short morning nap and one more solid afternoon nap. Esther will be 19 months. She often takes one killer 2-3 hour afternoon nap. She is into art, taking on and off her rain boots, learning new words, and doing things herself (with nearby support if needed.) Esther is dairy free and pescatarian (vegetarian plus fish- no chicken, meat, etc)

About the families: Brad and Heather live in the Kenton Neighborhood of North Portland. Brad is in medical school. Heather works from home, and ideally a Nanny would pick Will up in the morning and take him to Becca and Cort’s house in the Alberta Arts neighborhood. Becca and Cort are queer Jewish liberals. Cort works and is in Grad school. Becca works at Grant High School and follows the school schedule. The share is at the house in the Alberta Arts area. There are two indoor only cats who are just thrilled to be hugged by toddlers (I kid!).

About the gig:
This job would start January 5th and continue through the end of the school year (for staff) which is mid June. There would be no work for school holidays (ie MLK day, President’s day, Spring Break). Monday through Friday. Pick up Will at 7:30am, kids are picked up at 4:30pm (though sometimes Becca gets home earlier or later depending on meetings, never after 5) Nanny must have first aid/ CPR training, and a valid driver’s license, safe car. In addition to picking up Will in the morning, we hope for the kids to get out of the house daily… this can range from a neighborhood adventure, trip to a park, or trips to OMSI or the Children’s Museum (families have memberships to both.) Car seats provided. We are looking for someone patient and loving, who can handle kids who are in developmentally different places. Also someone who texts pictures to the parents would be appreciated!

Contact Heather at if interested.
