Grey Skies
Here in Portland, we have no shortage of grey, overcast skies. To date, I have escaped feelings of greyness. For me, one key is staying active, despite some drizzles or dark clouds. Today, though, with this current bout of rainy skies (and days more predicted for the rest of the week), I have hit a hard grey wall. I'm feeling icky inside and out - so blaahh, so blech, so bleehhh.
So, Portland urbanMamas, when you're feeling blue, what do you do???

Apparently this time I get sick. Ideally, I'd go shopping. Always lifts my spirits a bit. It's really hard to get any exercise, though, when you're sick.

I definitely do try to get out, but not to the park or the mall -- I walk with the boys to the coffee shop or Trader Joe's. Even if I just need a few things, it's nice to feel like I didn't stay inside the entire day! and maybe pick up the tastes of far away, coffee from Guatemala, Indian chutney, or something equally exotic and fun.
one thing I always do is bring along my camera -- somehow, through the lens, things always seem less dreary.

On Saturday I dropped my baby off at a friends for the night and I slept in. Then I woke up and had breakfast and went back to bed until 11! It was a beautiful thing. I cried as I drove away to leave her, but as soon as my head hit the pillow that night, the tears were gone, as I knew my body, not her cries, would wake me up, when I was ready, not her. Yardwork is another thing. Planning the garden for the coming spring. Pruning trees and bushes between rain drops. Digging in the soppy mud without gloves and coming in the house dirty. Having to mop up after your muddy foot prints in the front hall. Having to put your comfy jeans in the hamper as they are covered with your work-sweat and grass stains. Putting band-aids on blackberry scratches. Boy, it was a great weekend! There are many more to come. Start planning now, planning for the future makes it impossible to lament in the present (especially if you do it in a coffee house sipping your favorite vice while your kids entertain themselves, or, better yet, aren't there with you!). Hey, you know, I like this...I'm going to post it on my own blog!

I wear bright colors, expecially on my feet. Something about looking down and seeing bright red or orange perks me right up. I also think walking outside can be great and I like having lunch with a friend. So I'd suggest wearing bright shoes as you walk to lunch with your favorite girlfriend. :) It'll give you a chance to see that the trees are already in bloom.

Two words, puddle jumping!
Makes the dull grey weather almost fun.

Wow--really the weather has been so variable this winter--very little grey. I mean, it can get old, but there are years when it is grey from November to March. This year has been relatively nice.
Walks and coming home to warm soup and grilled cheese always cheers me up.
