Child roots is not what they say they are. I toured their new school and they had blinds with cords around the babies, inproper ventilation (poor air quality), old building in disrepair, poor kitchen facility with no stove or way to prepare meals. They say they are recycled but it just smacks of poor quality with high rates. They need to come down to reality and charge about half of what they do since they are delivering half of what they promise. The tour process is also a joke. We waited in the pouring down rain outside for the owner Christina to let us in for the monthly group tour. She doesn't want you to tour when the school is open which I would prefer to see the classrooms, children and teachers to make sure it would be a good fit. An empty school does not answer the questions we had in regards to the community.She seemed to be looking for who could pay the most and gave more preference to the family who dressed in fancy clothes and ignored the rest of us. She has been around for only 4 years and has no real substance or experience. She wants a 3 month notice to pull your child (RED FLAG!!!!). I found a much better place for my children but I thought I would add my two bits. Anyone else notice the same thing w/ them?

Looking for inner NE/SE family for infant nanny-share

We are looking for another family with an infant in inner SE/NE (near Laurelhurst) to do a nanny share beginning in July/Aug. We will need care part time, 20-24 hours preferably over 4 days for our daughter born in April. We also have a 3.5 year old son who will be in preschool. Our vision of the nanny share is some or complete overlap in the hours (both infants with the nanny at the same time to share costs). This would work whether you need FT or PT care. We don't have a nanny yet but have started looking. Ideally we would find one together and commit through the end of next summer (2013).
We have a modest home with a play room and fenced back yard and would be open to hosting or splitting time at houses. I am a full time nanny with 8 years experience and excelent references. I grew up on a small island in the San Juans, WA, where I spent most of my time outside. I think it is paramount for children to get as much time in nature as possible, even if it is only their own backyard. I currently work for two families in the portland area which fills about half of my week, and am looking to add one more family in the mornings starting the middle of June 2012. One of the families I work for now have two boys, 4 1/2 and 6, and they are two balls of energy, as well as daredevils. I have been with them for almost 3 years. The other family has a 3 year old girl and a 8 year old boy. I mostly only watch the younger one since the older one is in school most of the time, although I did watch him when he was younger, and still spend some time with him aswell. I have been with them for the past 3 years, and for a year previously with their son. the children I am with now are all about preschool age, but I love working with infants and toddlers aswell.
My childcare philosophy is simple. Possitive reinforcement. I find that they respond more to it than timeouts or scolding. Some children need a firm hand though, and I will use a timeout if it is needed (1 min. per year of child's age), along with clear comunication of expectaions. I find that if the kids are kept busy and engaged then misbehavior tends to happen less often. Plus, they have more fun, which in my opinion is one of the most important parts of being a kid.
I am an animal lover, I live with two cats at the moment and grew up with dogs, chickens, ducks, goats, and horses, so even a big crazy dog won't really faze me.

Are you interested in having your own experienced Montessori nanny for your child? I am an experienced Montessori teacher trained at The Montessori Institute of Minnesota, with a Masters degree in Education and Child Development from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. Before this I was most recently a teacher at a local Montessori elementary school, and prior to that taught at the Montessori Children's Community in the Dominican Republic. I also have over five years experience as a nanny from birth to age four, and have over ten years experience working with children between the ages of birth to age 12. I have reliable transportation and am willing to work throughout the Portland metro area.
What I have done before has sometimes gone beyond *just* child care (though it certainly has included it!). I have been a more tradititional nanny, but I have also developed what is more akin to in-home preschool/ elementary school with a large dose of silliness and fun. I would like to recommend our nanny, Ahura to anybody looking for childcare. She took wonderful care of our son from the time he was 6 months to 1 1/2, as well as another baby we did a nanny share with who was 6 months younger than our son.
Among all of her amazing qualities, she is unbelievably punctual, arriving a few minutes early everyday. In fact, as I write this, I cannot think of a time she showed up late. Further, she was always patiently waiting for us to come home, even when we failed to return the courtesy by sometimes coming home a few minutes late.
I appreciated that Ahura always reported on the day’s activities and any issues that arose effecting Owen’s regular schedule or any other issues that came up. Never once did she ever complain or seem frustrated, no matter what type of day Owen had.
Ahura is and always will be more than just a nanny. She will always be a special part of our son's life. She genuinely cared for him and he quickly grew to love her and look forward to his time with her. It was obvious that Ahura loved him as well.
Lastly, she handled the two-family, two baby situation wonderfully. Giving each child the attention they deserved, while providing them with the care and protection every parent hopes for. Further, the added complications of dealing with two families couldn’t have been easy, but we never saw her flinch from it. She handled it with grace.
Bottom line – I give my unconditional recommendation and support for Ahura. I believe she would provide any family looking for childcare services the ideal solution.
