My son absolutely has to help whenever there's a house project (and there are plenty), especially if it involves climbing a ladder or wielding a paintbrush - or, better yet, a power drill (and not the imitation plastic toy kind, either). So the Comcast/Hands On Portland Cares Day is the perfect opportunity for us to participate in a fun volunteer project as a family.
Picture your family: From 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturday 10.6.07, you and your kids could be: painting, cleaning, repairing, landscaping and sorting (sounds a little like home, huh?). They're working in 9 schools and 5 nonprofit agencies and inviting friends, families, companies and community members to join in. That's where we come in. Projects range from tearing down and cleaning donated bikes for the Community Cycling Center to PPS cleanups (Grout Elementary, Madison High, Ockley Green, and more) to sorting food at the Oregon Food Bank. Some projects are "family friendly," some less so, so be sure to find a good fit for your family. Which project are you gonna do? You can register here.
Better yet, picture us all together!! If enough Activistas are interested (we only need 10!), we can coordinate and choose a project to tackle together - Hands On makes it easy to be a Team Captain. If that's you (it is? great!), let us know in the comment section of this post. Me and my two would be happy to join forces with other uM families. And if we're fewer than 10, we can bypass the Team Captain idea and simply roll up our sleeves in the same place at the same time. Anyone game?
As Hands On says so well: Be the Change. Volunteer.

Lisa,
I am too committment-laden to be the leader, but I would love to join up with my two kiddos if another leader steps forward.
Thanks!
